The fact that people are saying social media is destroying the art of photography is crazy. If anything social media is opening doors for photography. Everybody takes photographs but that doesn’t make everybody a photographer. People are always taking pictures, Claudine Beaumont; the Technology Editor at The Telegraph says “We love snapping away so much, in fact, that we now take around 60 billion photos a year…” Not all of those pictures are going to be taken on professional cameras because not everyone owns one or uses it because they don’t see themselves as professional photographers.
Smart phones have made it so much easier to take photographs on a daily basis. Some people don’t view photography as an art anymore because of how easy it is to now take a photograph, but there is much more that goes into a photograph then just clicking a button. While there are so many unbelievably amazing shots taken on smart phones they don’t offer many settings for taking photographs. Taking photographs on a professional camera is so much more complex, you have to change settings all the time to get the right shot. Having a smart phone just makes it easier and more available for people to take photographs. Social media has changed photography so much but never in a bad way. In my opinion social media has made many more outlets for people to share their work. Instagram for example has a setting to wear you can make a company/business page and there is a button at the top of your page that says ‘Contact’. This makes it much easier for people to contact you for jobs because all your work is already on display for them to see. On average there are 500 million Instagram users and 300 out of those 500 million are active users (Craig Smith). With such a large number of users it’s almost impossible for someone to not see your work. People are so used to the old techniques they don’t give room to appreciate the new ones. Our way of life is always changing; music has changed, fashion has changed, technology has changed, I mean we have self driving cars now. Many people oppose the idea of the self driving cars just like people oppose the new ways of photography. I believe the new ways of photography are making it so much easier and available for people to capture moments in life. “There is no doubt that the smartphone is becoming ‘good enough’ much of the time; but thanks to mobile phones, more pictures are being taken than ever before,”(Christina Bonnington). Photography is always changing just like everything else in life. I don’t see any of the new ways or techniques of photography as a bad thing. Social media is expanding opportunities for photographers to share their work. Smartphones, while some people think they’re destroying photography I believe there making photography more available to people. Without smartphones there would be so little people taking photographs, there wouldn’t be as much photography out there for people to view. Works Cited Smith, Craig.
